The Pup Parade: A Cause for Paws
Walt and his wife are avid dog owners, as are many of the people that visit the Farmers’ Market each Saturday morning.  (They’ve started taking water and treats for the pets each week.)  In talking with people, Walt’s learned that many dog owners would like to see a dog park in Fayetteville.  The town already has one such facility; it’s located by the animal shelter in the...

Declaring Independents
A few days ago I wrote about the importance of shopping locally and supporting local businesses, particularly independent businesses.  In Thursday’s campaign newsletter, Walt echoes that sentiment and goes a few steps further.  We’re currently working with local businesses like Nightbird Books and Jammin Java to form an alliance of independent businesses.  Additionally, Walt, if...

Unchained: The Importance of Going Local
My work often takes me to the Fayetteville High School campus on Sixth.  Days like today—when it’s gorgeous out and I can’t find a granola bar in my backpack—I walk over to Brenda’s Bigger Burger at the corner of Sixth and Hill (just east of the railroad overpass).  Brenda’s is the best fast food burger in Fayetteville, if not all of Northwest Arkansas.  (I won’t pit...

One Hundred and Two
That’s how many miles Walt ran in May. He’s run 759 miles since the beginning of the year, working to cover all of Fayetteville as he’s done so. It’s particularly impressive when you consider Walt suffered from polio as an infant and had to wear leg braces for a number of years. (He was born eight years before Jonas Salk developed the vaccine.) He never let it hold him...

Saving Mt. Sequoyah
When rumors began circulating about five years ago that the Western Methodist Assembly might sell sixty-seven acres of the Mt. Sequoyah Woods, a group of people got together to form the Fayetteville Natural Herigtage Association, an organization dedicated to identifying and protecting our community’s most important natural areas and our community’s mature tree canopy. The FHNA worked...
